Simon MacEwan
Simon MacEwan is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice operates in a constant state of exploration and expansion. With works spanning from drawing to animation, to sculpture and jewellery, the artist has described his practice as “a tree, where new areas of skill are explored, but the main trunk is always the art-making.” Meticulously crafted and elegantly designed, his works often combine mechanical and post-apocalyptic city scapes with absurd imagery to activate the imagination and create new potentialities.
MacEwan’s work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at various Melbourne galleries including Anna Papas Gallery (2015, 2012, 2011); c3 contemporary art space (2010, 2009); Bus Gallery (2008) and Seventh Gallery (2005, 2004, 2003). He has also shown in group exhibitions at Melbourne’s Utopian Slumps, Kick Gallery (2008), NEXT WAVE Festival (2006, 2004); and Sydney’s UTS Gallery (2005). In 2013, MacEwan was a finalist for the John Fries Memorial Prize in Sydney and the Deakin Small Sculpture Prize in Melbourne. He was also a finalist for the 2011 Banyule Award for Works on Paper, Melbourne and the 2003 George Baldessin Award Exhibition, Melbourne.
MacEwan is represented in the Artbank collection, Sydney; the Banyule City Council Art Collection, Melbourne; Ipswich Art Gallery, Brisbane and the Monash University Museum, Melbourne; alongside private collections worldwide.
