Cyrus Tang’s Unknown is a memorial to those who disappear quietly from the world.
Through this body of work, which was created during the artists time in Korea, Tang is questioning our emotions about a person’s death going unnoticed and examines the fragility of the human existence. Tang believes that among the various stories in the world, the ones about disappearing are the most captivating to us. ‘Whether slowly or suddenly, everything around us will eventually disappear irrevocably. We too will disappear.’
Tang completed a Master of Fine Art (Research) at Monash University in 2010 after previously completing Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) at the VCA in 2004. Tang has held frequent solo exhibitions both in Australia and overseas including Crystal Day, Kallio Kunsthalle, Helsinki, Finland (2013); The Fleeting Now and Eternity, Anna Pappas Gallery, Melbourne (2010); and Ruin, Linden Centre for Contemporary Arts, Victoria, Australia (2009). Tang has also had her work present in a solo exhibition at Art Stage Singapore (2012) with Anna Pappas Gallery. Tang has been the recipient of numerous awards, grants and residencies including the Skills and Arts Development Grant, Australian Council for the Arts (2012); New Work Grant, Australian Council for the Arts (2009); Asialink Visual Arts Residency, Goyang Art Studio, Korea (2012); and Cite International des Arts Residency, Paris, France (2009) and most recently the Helsinki International Artist Programme Residency, Helsinki, Finland (2013).
